Acura is a vehicle from the Honda car manufacturer that offers luxury and high performance. Its main rivals are Lexus and Infiniti. Acura was introduced to the U.S. market in 1986 with the Integra sedan and coupe and the Legend sedan. Honda engineers aimed to produce a brand-new car that could offer innovations, performance and style. The Legend became the first Japanese luxury vehicle sold in the U.S. The brand was launched in Mexico, China and Russia in 2004, 2006 and 2008, respectively.
The Acura became successful soon after its introduction. Within the first years of the brand’s existence, it became one of the best-selling luxury vehicles in the U.S. Before Acura, Japanese cars had a reputation of economic value rather than luxury. Although its sales went down in the 1990s (possibly because of less inspiring designs and the switch to alphanumeric nomenclature formula, which were more anonymous), the brand introduced new models in 2000s and sales went up again.
The first of the redesigned models introduced in the 2000s was the 1999 Acura 3.2 TL. Drivers appreciated this sedan for its upscale image, blend of luxury and sportiness, high performance and reliability.
Another redesigned Acura was the MDX, a three-row luxury crossover SUV introduced in the early 2000s. It replaced the less popular SLX. In 2001, the RSX coupe was launched as a replacement for the Integra. Although the RSX was a hit in the tuning market, in 2006 it was taken out of the brand lineup, as Acura wished to move up in the luxury brand, not in the teenager-driven cars.
During 2004-2006, Acura sales increased dramatically, largely thanks to the TL, featuring a 270 horsepower V6 and Italianate styling, and the TSX, the only Acura 4-cylinder sedan. These two models became the brand’s top-selling vehicles. Around the same time, a new RL was launched, featuring improved styling and a 300 horsepower V6.
Since 2007, Acura has redesigned some of its flagship models, namely the TL Type-S, and introduced the new TL, RL and TSX models. During 2010-2014, the brand introduced the TSX wagon, the re-designed MDX with override paddles and 6-speed transmission, the ILX and the RDX. In 2014, Acura introduced the TLX, a new sports sedan, equipped with innovative features never seen before, including new handling controls and transmission system.
Just like any other vehicle produced after 1981, every Acura vehicle is assigned a unique VIN number that contains essential information about a vehicle, including the automaker, plant, engine type, model and much more.
